An article in today’s Washington Post titled “The Top Pickers vs. the Pack” compares the wisom of crowds phenomenom with a more thoughtful approach of finding expertise or genius from the crowd. To me, this shows a brilliant approach to democratizing punditry.

I particularly enjoyed learning about Marketocracy and their combination of performance analysis of virtual mutual funds created by users and the social networking aspect of asking other users to rate the stock-picker’s analysis. The difference between being right and knowing why you are right is the difference between being smart and being wise, or cognitive and metacognitive. Metacognition is much more powerful and useful to the rest of us.

is less interested in fame or celebrity than those who strive to be seen as wise. Most of today’s most noted pundits are born more out of their ambitions than any true measure of greatness, let alone wisdom. We would all benefit if thought leaders were more wise, more metacognitive and more demographically chosen.

Here is a first draft of the above book by Charles Leadbeater, which focuses on “innovation by the masses not for the masses.”

Courtesy of TED:

With “We Think” he tries to go beyond that and describe how the increasing involvement of “large groups of committed and knowledgeable amateurs, working without pay, are creating highly collaborative forms of organization which operate with little hierarchy and bureaucracy and yet mobilize resources of a scale to match the biggest corporations in the world” and analyze what that means for the future of society and businesses. “Thank to low-cost technology, many more consumers can become producers at least some of the time (…) The next big thing will be us, our power to share and develop ideas without having to rely on formal organizations”.

In the spirit of mass collaboration, Charles is asking for comments. Peer power! Way cool.

We’ve just added the new BlackCoat Minimal to our Amazon store and we’re offering it at a special price to generate some traffic. We have listed it here: Amazon.com: BlackCoat Minimal: The Ultra Light Travel Coat: Apparel
This is the perfect coat for times when you don’t need a parka but need to keep wind or rain off…or just need a light and intriguing layer over top or a few extra pockets for things that would otherwise create unsightly bulges or dangle off your belt.
